Picking the Right Cleats for Your Position
Your cleats are where you meet the field. Every cut, every sprint, every planted foot in the trenches starts with what's on your feet. But not all cleats are built the same, and picking the wrong pair for your position can cost you speed, stability, or both.
This guide breaks down the three main categories of football cleats, what positions they're best for, and how to find the right fit when you're shopping from Europe.
Speed Cleats
Best for: Wide Receivers, Cornerbacks, Running Backs, Return Specialists
Speed cleats are built light. Everything about them is designed to reduce weight and let you move as fast as possible. They typically feature a low-cut design that sits below the ankle, giving you maximum range of motion for quick cuts and explosive acceleration.
The Nike Vapor Edge Pro 360 is a perfect example. It's one of the lightest cleats on the market with a flyknit upper that wraps your foot like a sock. The stud pattern is designed for multi-directional speed, so whether you're running a slant route or breaking on a deep ball, you get grip without feeling locked in.
The tradeoff with speed cleats is ankle support. The low cut means less stability around the ankle joint. If you have a history of ankle injuries, you might want to pair these with a good ankle brace or look at mid-cut speed options.
Power Cleats
Best for: Offensive Linemen, Defensive Linemen, Linebackers
Power cleats prioritize stability and support over weight savings. They're typically mid-cut or high-top designs with reinforced uppers and stiffer soles. You need to anchor your feet and drive forward without slipping, and that's exactly what these are built for.
The Nike Alpha Menace Pro 3 is a popular choice in this category. It has a mid-cut design with Fastflex technology in the sole that lets you push off powerfully while still being able to move laterally. The stud pattern is aggressive and built for traction in the trenches.
The Under Armour Highlight MC is another solid option, especially for linebackers who need the support of a power cleat but still want to move in space. The high-top design locks your ankle in, and the CompFit sleeve gives a secure fit without feeling bulky.
All-Purpose Cleats
Best for: Quarterbacks, Tight Ends, Safeties, Multi-Position Players
If you play a position that requires both speed and power, or if you play multiple positions on your team (common in European football), all-purpose cleats are your best bet. They usually come in a mid-cut height and balance weight, support, and traction.
The Under Armour Spotlight MC is a versatile option that works across positions. It's light enough for skill players but supportive enough for bigger athletes who need to hold their ground.
For younger players or those just starting out, all-purpose cleats are the safest first purchase. You can always specialize later once you know exactly what position you'll be playing.
Stud Types: Molded vs. Detachable
This matters more than most players think:
Molded studs are built into the sole. They're lighter, require zero maintenance, and work well on most artificial turf and firm natural grass. For European players, this is often the best choice since many fields here are synthetic turf.
Detachable studs can be swapped out for different lengths depending on field conditions. Better for natural grass fields that get soft or muddy. More common in the US where natural grass fields are standard at higher levels.
If you mainly play on artificial turf (which is most European fields), go with molded studs. They'll last longer and feel more stable on that surface.
Sizing Tips for European Players
US shoe sizing and European sizing don't line up neatly, so here's what to keep in mind:
Football cleats generally run true to size or slightly tight. If you're between sizes, go up half a size. You want your toes to have a small amount of room at the front without your foot sliding around.
Always check the brand's specific EU-to-US size conversion chart. A US 10 in Nike is not identical to a US 10 in Under Armour. At Reyrr, every product page includes both EU and US sizing so you can compare directly.
If you're unsure, we recommend measuring your foot in centimeters and matching it to the CM column on the sizing chart. That's the most accurate way to get the right fit across brands.
Taking Care of Your Cleats
A few simple habits will make your cleats last significantly longer:
Clean them after every use. Brush off dirt and turf pellets, especially from between the studs. Let them air dry naturally and never put them near direct heat, which can warp the sole and break down the upper material.
If you play on both turf and grass, consider having two pairs. Switching between surfaces wears cleats down faster than sticking to one type.
