Finding the Perfect Football Helmet in Europe

Choosing a football helmet is one of the biggest decisions you'll make as a player. It's the piece of equipment you wear every single snap, and getting the right fit matters more than anything else. Whether you're suiting up for your first season or upgrading after years on the field, this guide covers everything you need to know to make the right call.

The Top Helmet Models Available in Europe

The European market has access to the same helmets used in the NFL and NCAA. Here are the models you'll see most often:

Riddell SpeedFlex — One of the most popular helmets at every level of football. The SpeedFlex features a flexible shell design and a quick-release facemask system. It's a proven choice for players who want reliability and a comfortable fit right out of the box. Available in adult and youth sizes.

Riddell Speed Icon — A step up in Riddell's lineup with enhanced padding and ventilation. Great for players who want premium comfort during long practices and hot game days. The Speed Icon uses the same facemask system as the SpeedFlex, so accessories are interchangeable.

Schutt F7 VTD II — Schutt's flagship helmet with their TPU cushioning system. The F7 is known for its aggressive look and excellent ventilation. It runs slightly different in sizing compared to Riddell, so pay attention to the measurement chart.

Xenith Shadow and Velocity — Xenith helmets use adaptive fit technology that adjusts to your head shape. They tend to fit a wider range of head shapes out of the box, which makes them a solid option if you're between sizes on other brands.

How to Measure Your Head for a Football Helmet

Getting the right size starts with a proper measurement. Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Use a soft measuring tape. Wrap it around your head about 2.5 cm (1 inch) above your eyebrows and around the widest part of the back of your head.

Step 2: Measure in centimeters. European players often find CM easier to work with, and most sizing charts include both CM and inches.

Step 3: Check the brand's specific sizing chart. A Medium in Riddell is not the same as a Medium in Schutt. Always go by measurement, not by the size label.

Step 4: When in doubt, reach out. At Reyrr, we help players find the right size every day. Send us your measurement and we'll recommend the exact model and size for you.

What to Look for When Trying On a Helmet

Once you have the helmet in hand, here's what a good fit feels like:

The helmet should sit snug on your head without pressure points. You should be able to fit one finger between your eyebrow and the front edge of the helmet. When you shake your head, the helmet should move with your head, not slide around. The jaw pads should touch your cheeks firmly but comfortably.

If the helmet rocks back and forth or you feel gaps, it's either too big or the wrong shape for your head. Try a different size or a different brand before settling.

New vs. Reconditioned: What European Players Should Know

In the US, helmet reconditioning is a major industry. In Europe, the market is almost entirely new helmets, which is actually an advantage. You get a helmet with fresh padding, current technology, and a full manufacturer warranty. At Reyrr, every helmet ships brand new.

Facemasks: Matching the Right Mask to Your Position

Your facemask depends on your position and personal preference:

Skill positions (QB, WR, RB, DB): Open cage designs with fewer bars for maximum visibility. Look for 2-bar or 3-bar configurations.

Linemen (OL, DL): Closed cage designs with more bars for added face coverage. These typically have a bar across the nose area.

Linebackers and Tight Ends: Something in between. A medium cage that gives decent visibility with good coverage.

Make sure the facemask is compatible with your helmet model. Riddell facemasks fit Riddell helmets, Schutt facemasks fit Schutt helmets. We carry facemasks for all major helmet brands at Reyrr.

Accessories You'll Need

A helmet alone isn't game-ready. You'll also want:

Chin strap: Most helmets come with a basic one, but upgrading to a padded chin strap improves comfort significantly.

Visor: Optional but popular. The Reyrr VIZU visor line fits most helmet models and comes in clear, tinted, and mirrored options.

Helmet decals: If you play for a team, you'll need decals. Make sure your helmet has a smooth shell surface for clean application.

Buying a Helmet in Europe: What's Different?

The main difference for European players is availability and shipping. Most US-based shops don't ship helmets internationally, or charge extreme shipping fees. That's exactly why Reyrr exists. We stock all major helmet brands in our European warehouse with fast shipping across the EU, Scandinavia, and beyond.

No customs surprises, no three-week waits, no dealing with international returns. Just order, get fitted, and get on the field.
